G-Shock presents: RVLRY talks to SBTG

Hace unos días tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar con Mark Ong "SBTG", miembro fundador de la Royalefam, quien vino desde Singapur para presentar su mas trabajo con DC Shoes, y en el marco de este evento tan esperado por muchos sneakerheads en México, RVLRY tuvo la oportunidad de realizar una entrevista a este gran diseñador y artista, en donde hablamos de su música favorita, de su entrada al skateboarding y su cambio de la "Boys Brigade" a la "Bones Brigade" y su acercamiento a G-Shock:

Rojovolovan: First of all I’d like to say that is such an honor to be here with you Mark, because you’re one of the most respected artists in streetwear & sneakers around the world, and we really like your work, what you do with clothing, shoes, is great; but I’d like you to tell me please: How do you feel about being here in Mexico City and Latin-America in general? Because we understand is your first time in here.

(Primero que nada me gustaría decir que es un honor estar aquí contigo Mark, ya que eres uno de los mas respetados artistas de los sneakers y streetwear alrededor del mundo, y a nosotros de verdad nos gusta tu trabajo, lo que haces con la ropa, los kicks, es genial, pero me gustaría que me dijeras por favor: ¿Cómo te sientes de estar en la Ciudad de México y en Latinoamérica en general? Entendemos que es tu primera vez aquí.)

SBTG: Well I think I came before once, in a trip I made when I was little kid and I came with my parents, in one of our “US Tours”, I think I came to Mexico I don’t remember very well where in Mexico I was, because we were in San Diego and we went to the closest Mexican town, but I don’t remember much, all I wanted to do was going to skate-shops and that, because back then we didn’t have any or so many skate-shops in Singapore, and America was like the “Mecca” of skateboarding, so I wanted to check the scene and stuff; but now that I’m here with Sue, it’s so good, we feel so warm, it felt so comfortable when we were at Nito’s place, and well, all I can say is that we don’t feel like if we have left Asia, not at all; there are some aspects where it reminds me of my country. But for sure, I like Mexico a lot.

(Bien, creo que vine antes en un viaje cuando era niño y vine con mis padres en uno de sus "tours" a USA, creo que vine a México, aunque no recuerdo muy bien en donde, porque estabamos en San Diego (Caifornia) y de ahí fuimos al poblado mexicano contiguo mas cercano, pero no recuerdo mucho, todo lo que quería hacer era ir a las skate-shops y eso, porque en ese entonces no había tantas tiendas de este tipo en Singapur, y América era como la "Mecca" del skateboarding, entonces yo quería ver la escena real y todo lo que a rodeaba; pero ahora que vengo con Sue, es tan bueno, se siente tan cálido, me sentí muy agusto en la casa de Nito, y bueno, todo lo que puedo decir es que no se siente como si hubiera dejado Asia, no del todo al menos, hay muchos aspectos en los que me recuerdan a mi país. Pero seguro, adoro México.)

RV: That’s good, is great you fell comfy being here, but you tell us that it reminds you a lot to Asia, what about the food, wich one is more spicy? Asia’s or Mexico’s? I ask you this because I saw you eating jalapeño at no issue the other day

(Eso bueno, es excelente que te sientas comodo aquí, pero nos dices que te recuerda mucho a Asia, que tal la comida, ¿cual pica mas? ¿Asia o México? Te pregunto porque te vimos comiendo jalapeño sin problemas el otro día)

SBTG: Well, it’s a different kind of spicy, because there’s like “Asian spicy” and “Mexican spicy” but I haven’t had much of the Mexican one tough, but it’s a real good spicy, because it’s not annoying, you can continue the next bite, it doesn’t burn like some Asian dishes, like Thai, and I guess I grew up eating a lot of spicy so it doesn’t bother my stomach, so it’s cool, I’m used to it.

(Es un picante diferente, porque digamos que es como el "Picoso Asiático" y el "Picoso Mexicano" pero no he probado mucho del mexicano, aunque es muy bueno, no es de ese tono que te harta, ya que puedes seguir comiendo, y no te quema como algunos platillos asiáticos, como la comida thai, pero crecí comiendo muchas especias entonces no le molesta a mi estómago, esta bien, estoy acostumbrado)

RV: That’s cool so you won’t have issues trying our dishes, but now let’s get to like the real stuff, I would like you to tell me, how was your first approach to skateboarding, how did you get in it, did you see a video, a friend of yours, or how was it?

(Eso esta bien, así no tendrás problemas probando nuestros platillos, pero vamos a algo mas real, me gustaría que nos dijeras: ¿como fue tu primer acercamiento al skateboarding, como entraste a él, viste un video, fue un amigo, como fue?)

SBTG: Ah, nice question; I was in this uniform group, named “Boys Brigade”, kinda like Boy Scouts in Singapore, and we used to were this uniform that was real tight, almost military and that we had to wear with boots, it was real bad, but once we were out in a hot day, wearing these uniform wich had super heavy and hot fabrics, we were standing there in the sun, sweating a lot because of the heat, and outside the gate, this kid comes by and I hear the noise (starts imitating the sound of the urethane over the asphalt) I see the skateboard, and the he pops up an Ollie, I just thought that was the coolest thing ever.

(Ah, buena pregunta, yo estaba en este grupo uniformado "Boys Brigade", algo así como los Boy Scouts en Singapur, y usabamos este uniforme superajustado, casi militar, y lo teníamos que usar con botas, era en verdad terrible, pero un día caluroso que estabamos afuera, usando este uniforme que tenía materiales super pesados y calientes, sudando a chorros por el calor, afuera de la puerta, este chico viene y escucho el ruido[empieza a imitar el ruido de las ruedas de una tabla sobre el asfalto] veo la patineta y después lo veo hacer un ollie, yo solo pensé que eso era la cosa mas increíble.)

RV: EVER!

(Lo mas increíble en verdad)

SBTG: Indeed, I was seven or eight years old, I really don’t remember, but I thought that was the best thing ever, and so that day I quit the Boys Brigade, to be part of The Bones Brigade. But that was only a few years back, not so long ago.(laughs)

(Sin duda, y tenía siete u ocho años, no recuerdo muy bien, pero para mi fue la cosa mas increíble del mundo, y ese día renuncie a la Boys Brigade, para ser parte de la Bones Brigade, pero eso fue hace unos años, no hace mucho.[risas])

RV: Well you’re very young, so no doubt that it was only a few years ago, but now that you talk of The Bones Brigade, who was your favorite rider?

(Bueno eres muy joven, así que no dudamos de que no hace mucho de eso, pero ahora que hablas de la Bones Brigade, ¿quien era tu rider favorito?)

SBTG: Ah, well, the one that made the biggest impression on me, taking into account that at that time the newest video was Ban This, I’d have to say Frankie Hill, because when he came out on the scene, I remember he was skating wearing red pants, at that time it was like: C’mon, who wears red pants? So yeah, he was the one who left a deeper impression on me at that time.

(Ah, bien, el que dejo mayor impacto en mi, tomando en cuenta que en esa época lo mas reciente era el video Ban This, tendría que decir que fue Frankie Hill, porque cuando saltó a la escena del skateboarding, recuerdo que usaba pantalones rojos, y en ese momento era como: ¡Vamos! ¿Quién usa pantalones rojos? así que sí, el fue quien me impacto más.)

RV: Did you ever dress like that, with bright colors, like these pink hot pants alla Christian Hosoi or somethin’?

(¿Alguna vez te vestiste asi, con colores brillantes, como esos hot pants rosas como los que usaba Christian Hosoi?)

SBTG: The brightest pants I had were some orange short pants, like you know, the ones that were below the knees, so my father cut’em off, because he tought I was a freak, he was like: Hey! Who wears clothes like that? But yeah it was real funny having those clothes

(Lo pantalones mas brillantes que tuve, era unos shorts naranjas, pero sabes, eran de esos que no eran ni pantalones ni shorts, llegaban abajo de las rodillas, así que mi padre los cortó porque penso que era extraño, el me decía: ¡Hey! ¿Quién viste así? Era muy divertido tener ese tipo de ropa)

RV: Yeah, but I’ve seen them back, people is more open-minded nowadays, but how about a G-Shock, were you aware of the G’s back in the day?

(Sí mucho, jaja, pero las hemos visto otra vez estos días, la gente es mas abierta hoy en día, pero que tal de G-Shock, ¿los conocías en aquel entonces?)

SBTG: Yes, well, is because I use to wear a regular Casio watch, and in one of my birthdays my mother gave a G-Shock, so just looking at it was awesome, the shape, the fact that it was a Databank; to me it was such a big update, like if I was driving a Honda and my mom buys me a Ferrari (laughs) it’s for real, like I looked at it and I was like what’s this armor? It’s like the same thing that happens when you were regular vulcanized shoes and then you’re wearing real technical ones, so yeah, pretty amazing

(Sí, bueno, es porque yo solía usar un Casio regular, y en uno de mis cumpleaños mi madre me dio un G-Shock, entonces solo verlo era asombroso, la forma, el hecho de que tuviera Databank; para mí fue una gran actualización, es como si estuviera manejando un Honda y de pronto mi made me compra un Ferrari [risas] es en serio, yo lo veía y decía: ¿que es esta armadura? es como cuando tienes un simples zapatos vulcanizados y de pronto traes unos super avanzados, así que, en verdad es impresionante.)

RV: And now you’re working with G-Shock, how did feel when they asked you to do it?

(Y ahora has trabajado con G-Shock, como te sentiste cuando te lo pidieron?

SBTG: I was like: Yes! Yes! Of Course!

(Yo estaba como: ¡Sí! ¡Sí! ¡Por supuesto!)

RV: Did you ever think of working with G-Shock?

(¿Alguna ves pensaste en trabajar con G-Shock?)

SBTG: Yeah, well I guess when you do what you love, and you just concentrate on it, you get to do it, and well I always base my work on the sthat I grew up with, and work with the companies I grew up with, the cultures that surrounded me and them, like Nike, like DC, like G-Shock; so it’s pretty much amazing.

(Sí, bueno creo que cuando haces lo que te gusta, y te concentras en ello, llegas a hacerlo, y aparte yo siempre baso mi trabajo en las cosas con las que crecí, y trabajo con las marcas con las que crecí, las culturas que las rodean, como Nike, DC, G-Shock, es muy impresionante.)

RV: Embrace the past to improve your present and your future, right?

(Abraza tu pasado para mejorar tu presente y tu futuro, ¿cierto?

SBTG: Definitively

(Definitivamente)

RV: Ok, so now let’s do a little top 3, tell us please: favorite DC rider, favorite Nike rider and your favorite G-Shock Model

(Ok, ahora hagamos un pequeño top 3, dinnos por favor: patinador favorito de DC, de Nike y tu modelo favorito de G-Shock.)

SBTG: DC skater, that’d be Danny Way of course, because he did this amazing jump on the Megaramp for The DC Video, and the soundtrack for that was Orion from Metallica, wich is one of my favorite bands; I grew up listening to Metallica too, and so watching him on the Peralta videos, and then creating a company that changed skaters lives and wardrobes, that’s so amazing

(Skater de DC, ese sería Danny Waypor supuesto, porque hizo este salto impresionante en la Megarampa para el DC Video, y la canción que uso era Orion de Metallica, la cual es una de mis banda favoritas, crecí escuchando a Metallica también, y verlo en los videos de Peralta, y luego crear una compañía que cambiara la vida y los guardarropas de los skaters, es asombroso)

RV: D.Way is a real good skater and person!

(D.Way es un muy buen skater y una gran persona)

SBTG: Yes indeed; and for Nike, well I don’t know a lot about the members of the Nike Team, but one the skaters I’m really psyched on is Paul Rodriguez, he’s got his own signature model, and talkin’ about sneakers he’d be like Michael Jordan, because people is crazy for Jordan’s kicks and for Rodriguez’ kicks, he went further than having only a Dunk, he has his own shape, I really look up to him, he’s young, he has his family, he’s clean, he’s not like rock ’n roll with drugs and alcohol, besides his style is great, and I think he’s good looking (laughs), he achieved so much at such a young age.

(Así es sin duda, y bueno no conozco mucho de miembros del equipo Nike, pero uno de los skaters que mas me gusta es Paul Rodriguez, tiene su propio modelo y hablando de sneakers sería como el Michael Jordan, porque la gente se vuelve loca con los Jordan's y también se vuelve loca por los Rodriguez', va mas allá de que le hayan dado un Dunk, tiene su propia silueta; en verdad lo admiro, es joven, es un chico de familia, se mantiene limpio no como los skaters que son tipo rockstar con drogas y alcohol, aparte de que su estilo es genial, aparte creo que es guapo [risas], ha logrado mucho para la edad que tiene.

RV: Yeah, he’s like 25 and he’s done so much

(Sí, tiene 25 y ha hecho tanto)

SBTG: Hope he’ll keep like that; oh I was forgetting my favorite G-Shock Model, uh, that’d be the one that my mother gave me, wich unfortunately I don’t know wich model that is, but is a round one, but it was so good, I should’ve have worn it for like ten years until the rubber and all felt down, I was wearing like only the skeleton of it, and it became so cool among my friends

(Espero que siga así, o y me olvidaba, mi model favorito de G-Shock, ah, sería el que me dió mi madre, el cual desafortunadamente no sé cual es, pero era uno redondo, era tan bueno, lo usé alrededor de diez años hasta que el plástico y todo se cayó, usaba solo el esqueleto y aún así se volvió popular entre mis amigos.)

RV: Like: hey! Where did you get that G-Shock?

(Como: ¡hey! ¿Donde conseguiste tu G-Shock?)

SBTG: Yeah, everybody like it, and besides that, I even had to put it a Velcro strap; it was so rad. I remember being so proud of my watch like one time I threw it off a 2^nd floor just to bust on my friends, like: hey yo! My watch can do this! Is yours this tough?

(Sí, a todos les gustaba, aparte tuve incluso que ponerle una tira de velcro, era loquísimo. Recuerdo estar tan orgulloso de mi reloj, que una vez lo aventé de un 2do piso, solo para molestar a mi amigos, asi de: ¡Hey! Mi reloj hace esto, ¿el tuyo es así de rudo?)

RV: No way you did that, I mean we know the G-Shock’s can hold that but, for real?

(¿En serio hiciste eso? Es decir, sabemos que los G's aguantan eso y mas, pero ¿en verdad?)

SBTG: Yeah! (Laughs) It was so funny, I was in elementary school, and it cost like $50. – USD, wich at that time was a lot of money.

(¡Sí! [risas] Fue muy divertido, estaba en la primaria, y costo como $50.- USD, lo que en ese entonces era mucho dinero)

RV: So you were like: I have a G-Shock and you don’t

(Entonces era de: Yo tengo un G-Shock y tu no)

SBTG: Yeah, actually I’ve always liked to show off, (Laughs) but it’s cool, because it’s in some way what drives me to make good designs, so people can show’em off

(Sí, de hecho siempre me ha gustado presumir [risas] pero es padre, porque en cierta forma es lo que me provoca a hacer buenos diseños, que la gente pueda presumirlos)

RV: Actually that’s true, because you go to your school or your workplace and you’ll be saying: look at my new DC’s X SBTG, or look at my new G-Shock.

(Eso es cierto, porque cuando vas a la escuela o a tu trabajo llegas y dices: Mra mis nuevos tenis DC X SBTG o mira mi nuevo G-Shock)

SBTG: Yeah, so based on that it’s not like selfish, at the end of the day the other person, if he or she liked your stuff, what they’ll be doing is spreading the love and the quality of a product, because take for granted that if you show it off, the other person is gonna do it also.

(Sí, así que basados en esos, no es envidioso, al final del día, si a ellos les gusto lo qu e traías, lo que harán es ocmpartir el amor a ese producto y su calidad, porque puedes tener por seguro, que si tu lo presumiste, el otro también lo hará)

RV: So you do designs so people can show them off, but do you like to show people your likes on your designs? Like, ah, your inspiration?

(Entonces haces diseños para que la gente pueda presumirlos, pero ¿en tus diseños muestras lo que te gusta, como lo que te inspira?

SBTG: Sure, for example Futura, or Tim Armstrong, I like Rancid a lot, but Armstrong’s voice, and his music, I think it is fully self-expression, so he does that and I’m attracted to that because it’s like a controlled chaos, it’s rough but it’s beautiful.

(Seguro, por ejemplo Futura, Tim Armstrong, me gusta mucho Ranchid, pero la voz de Armstrong, su música, creo que es una completa expresión de él mismo, entonces el así lo hace y eso me atrae, es como caos controlado, es rudo y es hermoso.)

RV: Yeah, his music is incredible, because his voice can be so “aggressive” if I may say, but at the same time so calmed, it’s so good; and well we’ve been talking for a while and is been a real pleasure and honor, but I have to throw my last question, wich is kind of a funny one, wich is the best or like the biggest trick you’ve made on a skateboard?

(Sí, su música es increíble, porque su voz suena tan "agresiva" si puedo decirlo así, pero a la vez tan calmada, es muy bueno; pero bien ya hemos estado hablando por un rato y ha sido un gran placer y un honor, pero debo hacer mi última pregunta, que es un tanto curiosa, ¿Cual es el mejor o el truco mas grande que haas hecho en una patineta?)

SBTG: That’d be a b/s flip, but it was over a garbage bag; and it’s the biggest one for me because when I made it, I was in the air and I kinda felt like it was in slow-motion, I could feel like every moment: from the pop, the air, the catch, specially the catch because I made it in the very last moment, so, yeah that one.

(Ese sería un b/s flip, pero lo hice sobre una bolsa de basura; y fue el mas grande para mí porque cuando lo hice, estaba en el aire y lo sentí como en camara lenta, y podía sentir cada momento: desde el pop, el aire, atraparla en el aire, especialmente eso atraparla, porque lo hice en el último momento, así que es ese.)

RV: Ok Mark, well thanks a lot for these words and for your time, a real pleasure!
