Recientemente DC Shoes se unió nuevamente con uno de nuestros diseñadores favoritos, Mark Ong "SBTG," para presentarnos un plato y una edición limitada de playeras conmemorativas por el Año Nuevo Chino, El Año del Dragón, a la cual llamaron “Enter the Dragon,”  ahora te presentamos éste video, en el que podemos ver  un grupo de Skaters enmascarados buscando una caja sagrada que guarda estas playeras.

EL talentoso diseñador y customizador de sneakers, Mark Ong "SBTG," no deja de sorprendernos con sus habilidades para rediseñar algunos de los mejores pares que hay, y prueba de ello, es este par de Air Jordan III "Spitfire," el cual, con colores apropiados para la temporada, nos recuerda de los viejos aviones de guerra, y los uniforme militares que se usan en regiones muy calurosas, aunque también claro, a su Dunk Low "Casablanca Redux"

Uno de los artistas y customizadores de sneakers, más importante de la escena, Mark Ong (a.k.a. SBTG), nostrae este pequeño corto llamado "We Are 138," en conjunto de la tienda FICE de Salt Lake City, Utah, para explicar como es su proceso creativo, y como fue crecer en Singapur, un país rico en cultura, pero con bastantes restricciones también. En esta ocasión entrevistamos a Mark Ong, SBTG, en el Upper Playground de la Ciudad de México en la Colonia Condesa, y en esta entrevista hablamos de arte, skateboarding, su acercamiento a DC Shoes y en especial al “Circus Of Mutants” :

Rojovolovan: Hola Mark, ¿Cómo estás hoy?

(Hi Mark, how are you today?)

SBTG: Bien, muchas gracias, mira mi nuevo cinturón (Mark modela un cinturón hecho con zarape) me encanta esta tela, probablemente la use en alguna colección, adoro los colores que están en él; lo único malo de hoy es que este dolor de cabeza que tengo desde la mañana.

(Fine, thank you, look at my new belt [Mark models a belt made with zarape] I love this fabric, probably I’ll use it for a collection, love the colors on it; the only issue I’ve been having today is this headache I have since the early morning, but I’m accustomed to it

RV: ¿Seguro? ¿No quieres una pastilla o algo?

(Sure? Would you like a pillo r somethin?)

SBTG: No, estoy bien, mi café hará el resto (Mark da un trago a su “Café del Día” de Starbucks); ¿Oye estas usando los DC de Mike Shinoda?

(No, I’m fine, mi coffee will do the rest [Mark takes a sip of his “Coffee of the Day” from Starbucks] ; are you wearing The Mike Shinoda’s DC’s?)

RV: Sí, de hecho sí, estos me encantan soy fan de Shinoda y de lo que hace como artista y músico.

(Actually yes, I’m a fan of his work as an artist and as a musician)

SBTG: Sí, es muy bueno, de hecho recuerdo cuando estábamos checando los pedidos por internet que teníamos, sucedió que ví su nombre y dije: ¡Wow! ¿Será él? Sin duda debe ser él.

(Yes, he is really good, actually I remember when we were checking the online orders we had, and I saw his name and said: Wow! Could it be him? Must be him)

RV: Claro, aparte ¿Cuántos “Mike Shinodas” puede haber en el mundo?

(Sure, like Hoy many Shinoda’s could be in the world?)

SBTG: Exacto, pero eso no fue tan sorprendente como cuando estaba en mi estudio con Sue, y varios de mis internos y de pronto tocan la puerta, abro y resulta ser Mike Shinoda en persona junto con Joeph y yo simplemente dije: ¡Linkin Park! Reímos y cuando salí de mi asombro, los invité a pasar, compraron algunas cosas, fue algo realmente grato.

(Exactly, but that wasn’t as shocking as the day Me and Sue were at the studio with some of our interns and the someone’s knocking at the door, soon as I open I find is Mike Shinoda himself along with Joseph, and all I said was: Linkin Park! We laugh and when I kinda wake up of my awe, I let’em in, they purchased a few things, that was something real nice)

RV: Sin duda debió de serlo, e imagina ahora tú has colaborado con la misma marca que Mike para DC, y te iba a preguntar de eso el día de hoy, ya que en la entrevista pasada hablamos de G-Shock y de skateboarding, y es que de una u otra forma todos son eslabones de una gran cadena, pero en esta ocasión me gustaría que nos hablaras de cómo fue tu acercamiento a DC, sobre ¿cómo es que llegas a conocer esta marca?

(It should've been, and now check it out, you're working with the same brand Mike did, DC, and I was gonna ask you about it today, because in our previous interview we talked about G-Shock and skateboarding, and that's because in one way or another this is all part of the same cycle, but this time I'd like you to tell me about your approach to DC, 'bout how is that you get to know the brand?)

SBTG: Fue en los 90’s, y recuerdo fue algo muy innovador y muy fresco, porque en aquel entonces solíamos patinar con tenis como Vans, Airwalk o Vision, y todos de una u otra forma seguían una línea, incluso la forma de vestir, pero de pronto llega DC, y fue como: whoa! En verdad era muy fresco, la silueta de los tenis, la tecnología, y el hecho de que fue creada de skaters para skaters

(It was in the 90's, and I remember that it was something so innovative and so fresh, because back in the day we use to skate with shoes like Vans or Airwalk or Vision, and in someway they were all following the same path, even the way to dress wit'em; but then all of a sudden Dc jumps on the scene and it was like: Whoa! It was so fresh, the shape of the shoes, the technology, and the fact that it was from skaters to skaters)

RV: Entonces ¿DC influyó mucho en ti?

(So DC was a great influence for you?)

SBTG: Bastante, DC me hizo cambiar mi estilo de vestir, los materiales de los pantalones que usábamos, las playeras incluso, porque veíamos a estos skaters usar jerseys de basketball y tener un estilo completamente innovador, quizá un poco salido del clásico estereotipo de los skaters californianos, pero era un estilo muy fresco.

(A lot, DC made me change my way of dressing, the materials of the pants we were, even the tees, because we were seeing these skaters use basketball jerseys and having a complete innovative style, maybe a little bit out of the californian skater stereotype, but very fresh one tough.)

RV: Lo que me describes es un poco como el estilo de Rob Dyrdek

(What you describe is a little like Rob Dyrdek's style)

SBTG: Exactamente como Rob Dyrdek, Danny Way, Rick Howard, un equipo impresionante, innovador y muy fresco.

(Yeah, like Rob Dyrdek, Danny Way, Rick Howard, a very impressive team, very innovative and really really fresh)

RV: ¿Es eso lo que más te llamaba la atención, el equipo, o era algo más?

(Is the team the fact that caught your eye the most, or was there something else?)

SBTG: Es que era todo, desde el logo, que en ese primer momento que lo ví, dije: ¡wow! Porque tenía cierta similitud con el logo de Channel, y eso me gustó mucho.

(It was everything, starting with the logo, that when I saw it for the first time, I said: wow! Because it had a little similarity with Channel's, so I liked that a lot.)

RV: Oye es cierto, ahora que lo dices tienen cierta similitud; pero dime por favor, viendo tú a Danny Way o a Colin McKay patinar en ese entonces, ¿alguna vez intentaste patinar vertical?

(Hey is true, now thatyou mention it, yeah they look alike, but please tell me, with you watching Danny Way or Colin McKay skate back then, Did you ever try to skate vert?)

SBTG: (risas) No, (más risas) no hay forma, la vertical es algo completamente fuera de mi rango, más aparte en Singapur casi no había rampas, principalmente nos dedicábamos al street.

([Laughs] No, [more laughs] no way, vert is out my range, specially because in Singapur there were not so many ramps, we kinda focus on street style)

RV: Entonces DC, Way y Dyrdek fueron parte de tu inspiración hablando de skateboarding pero en cuanto a arte, diseño ¿quiénes fueron tus inspiraciones, tenías algún diseñador o artista que te llamará la atención o que dijeras “que trabajo”, así como Lagerfield, Fairey o parecido?

(Ok, so DC, Way & Dyrdek were part of your inspiration talking about skateboarding, but how about art, design, who were your inspirations? did you have a favourite designer or a favourite artist that marked you deeply, maybe Lagerfeld, Fairey or someone like'em?)

SBTG: Sí, si lo hubo sin duda, para mí fueron varios artistas los que yo veía y me sentía impresionado, pero tal vez uno de los que más llamó mi atención fue Futura, por su estilo, la forma en la que trabaja, es realmente bueno, hace unos años tuve la oportunidad de conocerlo, y aprendí mucho de el, como tratar a la gente, al público, y es que es una persona tan talentosa y tan enfocada, es decir, sabe cuando decir que no y lo dice con respeto, no importa la sitacuión, fue muy muy impresionante.

(Yes there were indeed, some artist that I looked and I felt amazed, but maybe one of those artist who impressed me the most was Futura, because of his style, the way he works, he is really good a few years ago I had the chance to meet him, and I learned a lot from him, how to deal with people, the crowd, and is just that he is so talented and focused, I mean, he knows when to say no, and he says it so respectfully, no matter the situation, it was pretty amazing.)

RV: Conocer a uno de tus ídolos, o alguien de quien eres fan, siempre es algo muy impresionante y que de cierta forma nos llega a parecer irreal, hablando de esto, tanto en esta entrevista como en la anterior nos comentas que eres fan de Danny Way, ¿lo has conocido ahora con lo de DC?

(Knowing one of your idols, or someone you admire is something really overwhelming, and in someway we get to think it's unreal, talking of this, in the previous interview yo told us that you're Danny Way's Fan, with all this DC biz, have you got the chance to meet'im?)

SBTG: Me encantaría, convivir con todos ellos, en verdad los admiro

(I'd love to, hang out with the DC crew, I really look up for them)

RV: De hecho yo también los admiro, en especial a Kalis y a Way, quien es alguien realmente talentoso y que ha buscado la progresión del skateboarding, por cierto, el está en el mismo equipo que Paul Rodriguez, Plan B y de hecho P-Rod sacó una tabla en colaboración con Don Pendleton, no sé si lo conozcas

(Me too, specially Kalis and Way, who is someone really talented and who has pursuit the progression of skateboarding, and by the way, he is in the same team Paul Rodriguez is, Plan B, and actually P-Rod just released a board in collabo with Don Pendleton, I don't know if you know him.)

SBTG: Sí, es un gran artista, he visto otra tablas y trabajos que ha hecho.

(Yes, he is a great artist, I've see some boards and other pieces he's made)

RV: ¿Te gustaría ser tu el que hiciera otra línea de tablas para Plan B, y así trabajar con Way, McKay, Rodríguez, etc.?

(Would you like to be the next one to do a series for Plan B and so working with Way, McKay, rodriguez, etc.?)

SBTG: Pero claro que me gustaría, eso sería de lo mas irreal.

(sure man, I'd love to, that be the most unreal thing ever.)

RV: Espera, para irreal tus kicks con DC, ¡están increíbles! Háblanos de ellos por favor, ¿cómo es que conociste el Circus of Mutants?

(No wait, for unreal your kicks with DC, they're so awesome! Please tell us about'em, How is that you get to know the Circus of Mutants?)

SBTG: Fue a causa de un amigo, Lucas, yo estaba un día patinando con él y me contó acerca de este crew, sobre el cual yo ya había escuchado antes, y de pronto me dice que él es aquel al que le decían “La Mosca”, era algo que yo no podía creer.

(That was because of a friend of mine, I was skating with him and he told me about this crew, wich I've already heard of before, and then he tells me he's the one that they used to call "The Fly", it was something I couldn't beleive)

RV: Asombroso, que uno de tus amigos resulte ser un skater local legendario, es algo realmente increíble.

(Amazing, that one of your friends turns out to be a local legend of skateboarding, that's pretty cool)

SBTG: Mucho, es por eso que quiero en cierta forma contar su historia, y es que de hecho eso es lo que deseo hacer con mi trabajo, contar “las historias”.

(A lot, thats why I want to tell his story in someway, and that's actually what I want to do with my job, tell "the stories")

RV: Creo que eso hará que mucha gente entienda mas de tu trabajo, y eso es algo muy importante, y algo que le da más valor aún; pero entonces, este amigo tuyo: Lucas “The Fly”, el te contó su historia y ¿en base a eso te inspiraste a hacer los bocetos, pensaste mucho en ello, consideraste usar camuflaje en algún momento o como fue este proceso creativo?

(I guess that's gonna make a lot of people, understand a lot more your job, and thats pretty interesting, and something that I think increases the worth of it, but then, this friend of yours: Lucas "The Fly", he told you his story and then what? based on that you got inspired to make the sketches, you tought a lot about it, did you ever tought of using camo or how exactly was the creative process?)

SBTG: Simplemente escuche su historia y lo visualice de inmediato, quería algo simple y directo fue así que surgió ese trazo.

(I simply heard his story, visualize it right away, and decided I wante something simple and straight to the point, so that's basically how it came out)

RV: Perfecto, un gran trabajo por cierto, y hablando de tu trabajo con DC, ¿quién de este equipo sientes que tiene más historias que contar?

(Nice, great work if I may say, and talking about your work with DC, who do you think has the most stories to tell?)

SBTG: Danny Way; saltar La Muralla China, patinar sin importar las lesiones, crear una compañía de skaters para skaters, no cualquiera hace eso.

(Danny Way, jumping the Great Wall, skating so hard with all those injuries, creating a company from skaters to skaters, you don't see a lot people doing that)

RV: No cualquiera, y obvio nadie se expresa como tú Mark, creaste un gran sneaker.

(That's right, not many people does that, and obviusly no too many people xpress the way you do Mark, you made a great sneaker)

SBTG: ¡Muchas gracias!

(Thanks a lot!)

El día de ayer tuvimos la oportunidad de pasar una velada muy agradable con Mark Ong a.k.a. SBTG, quien compartió una parrilla con miembros de algunos medios, artistas, amigos y su esposa Sue.
